Álvaro is qualified to practise law in Spain and as a solicitor of the senior courts of England and Wales. A civil and common law lawyer, he advises private entities, States and international organisations on a wide range of contentious and non-contentious public international law matters.
His contentious experience includes representing and providing States in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia with legal advice in relation to proceedings before the International Court of Justice, providing States and individuals with advice in relation to proceedings before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, representing foreign investors and States in high-profile investment treaty arbitrations, representing applicants and respondents in ICSID annulment proceedings, representing States in domestic judicial proceedings on sovereign immunity matters and representing private entities in international commercial arbitrations as well as in domestic judicial proceedings regarding the enforcement of arbitral awards.
Álvaro’s non-contentious experience includes advising private entities on investment treaty law and on multiple other public international law areas. He also has advised States and international organisations on international trade law and on human rights, international humanitarian law and international criminal law issues.
Álvaro has taught law of the sea, international environmental law and immunities at King’s College and at SOAS University of London. He also has delivered practical training in public international law and international investment law to public officials of multiple States. Equally, he has published a book chapter on sovereign immunities and arbitration awards and articles on issues such as investment treaty arbitration, law of the sea, international dispute resolution and business and human rights.
Prior to joining us, Álvaro worked in the international arbitration group of a global law firm. Before that, he worked at a maritime law firm, where he represented clients in international commercial arbitrations and mediations and in judicial proceedings before Spanish courts.
