Álvaro is a Spanish lawyer, member of the Madrid Bar. He holds an LLB and a BA in Political Science from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid as well as a Master of Advanced Studies in Public International Law from the University of Leiden.
Álvaro advises private entities, sovereign States and international organisations on a wide range of contentious and non-contentious public international law matters. His contentious experience includes representing a State before the International Court of Justice in proceedings related to accusations of transboundary harm, representing multiple foreign investors and a sovereign State in investment treaty arbitrations under the ICSID and SCC Arbitration Rules, representing the Respondent in an ICSID annulment proceeding and representing a State in domestic judicial proceedings on sovereign immunity matters.
Álvaro’s non-contentious experience includes advising private entities on the legal implications of investment treaties and of public international law for their planned foreign investments as well as on the enforcement of arbitration awards. He also has advised an international organisation on international trade law. Equally, he has provided multiple States with advice in relation to proceedings before the International Court of Justice and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights as well as on current international humanitarian law and international criminal law issues.
Álvaro has taught law of the sea and international environmental law at King’s College and delivered practical training in public international law and international investment law to lawyers from various ministries of States in Africa and in the Middle East. He also recently published a book chapter on sovereign immunities and investment treaty arbitration awards.
Prior to joining us, Álvaro trained in the international arbitration group of a global law firm. Before that, he worked as an associate at a maritime law firm in Spain, where he participated in a number of international commercial arbitrations and mediations and represented clients in judicial proceedings before Spanish courts.
