Govert Coppens

Govert is dual qualified in civil and common law as a solicitor of England & Wales and a member of the Brussels Bar. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in law from the University of Leuven, a Diploma in Legal Studies from King’s College London and a Certificate of Public International Law from the Hague Academy of International Law. He is in the final stages of his doctoral thesis and expects to be conferred a PhD in law from the University of Leuven in due course.

He advises and represents sovereign States, international organisations and corporate clients on a wide range of contentious and non-contentious public international law and international dispute resolution issues, in particular the protection of foreign investments under international investment agreements. He represents both claimants and respondents in investment treaty arbitrations, most recently a Caribbean, a European and a West-African State, and an investor in an arbitration against a Latin American State. His experience further includes advising States, corporations and an international organisation on matters of public international law, such as treaty drafting and State and diplomatic immunities.

Prior to joining Volterra Fietta, Govert worked at the international disputes department of a global law firm and was an independent legal consultant with two Asian law firms. In these roles, he has worked on arbitrations under ICSID, UNCITRAL and ICC Rules, WTO dispute settlement proceedings and a variety of commercial, administrative and criminal matters in domestic court litigation. He has also acted as an arbitrator in commercial disputes under the Rules of CEPANI, the Belgian Centre for Arbitration and Mediation.

Before entering private practice, Govert was a researcher and teaching assistant at the University of Leuven, where he is currently a guest lecturer on investment arbitration. He was also a Visiting Scholar at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at Cambridge University and a Junior Academic Visitor at the University of Oxford. He has published, spoken at international conferences and has been quoted in the international press on issues in the field of international investment disputes. In the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, his University of Leuven team was awarded the Hardy C. Dillard Award for best combined memorials globally.
